Algonquin Mist

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Grey mornings in Algonquin have their own beauty, even when the colour palette is limited. Mist lingers on this grey morning.

I walked down to the lake and found the shoreline had disappeared into grey. The trees along the far bank were visible only as dark shapes, their outlines softened and their details obscured. The water was still, reflecting what little there was to reflect. The whole scene existed in shades of grey, with no defined horizon, no clear boundary between water and air.

I set up and started shooting, not knowing if anything would come of it. Sometimes you photograph because the light is perfect; sometimes you photograph because the conditions are unusual and you want to see what they produce. This was the latter.

What emerged was an image that feels more like a watercolour than a photograph — soft edges, limited contrast, a kind of gentleness that Algonquin doesn't always show. The mist lingered, and this early period, when the world was suspended in grey, produced the shots I liked best.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. The matte finish is essential here, preserving the soft quality of the mist and the subtle tonal gradations. Algonquin photography for those who find beauty in grey mornings.
