Algonquin Winter

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Rivers in winter create their own abstractions, the interplay of water and ice producing patterns that no artist could plan.

This section of river was partly frozen, with ice sheets extending from the banks while the central channel still flowed. The moving water caught fragments of light, while the ice created texture and form along the edges. Solid and liquid, still and moving, white and dark.

What I find fascinating about river ice is how it forms. The edges freeze first, where the water is shallowest and slowest. Then the ice builds inward, but never quite meets in the middle where the current is strongest. The result is these organic shapes, margins of white framing a dark corridor of moving water.

Algonquin's rivers run all winter, even when temperatures drop well below freezing. The flowing water carries heat from upstream, resisting the ice that tries to claim it. A slow battle that plays out differently on each river, each winter, each cold snap.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. The brushed finish adds texture that complements the icy subject matter. Winter photography for those who see beauty in the struggle between water and ice.
