Sometimes the smallest subjects make the most powerful photographs. One red leaf, perfectly intact and beautifully shaped, lying alone among yellows.
The contrast was striking in its simplicity. It must have fallen from a different tree, perhaps carried by a gust of wind, to land in this spot where it would stand out so dramatically.
This is one of those images that gets at something beyond its subject matter. We have all felt like that red leaf at some point — different, standing out in ways we did not choose. But the image also suggests that there is beauty in that difference. The red leaf does not apologize for its colour; it simply is what it is.
