Artists Drive
Death Valley, California. Cruising along Artists Drive, each curve unfolds a new shade of Death Valley's volcanic past. As the sun dipped behind the Panamint Range, the light made every mile of this 9-mile loop worth the drive.
The story of Artists Drive is written in iron and manganese, chlorite and mica — elements that have weathered and oxidized over aeons to create this canvas of reds, pinks, greens, and purples. The volcanic deposits that form these badlands date back millions of years, yet in that fleeting light, they felt alive, breathing with colour under the California sun.
The palette here is almost unruly. The foreground hills ripple with bands of pink and mauve, while the mid-ground formations glow with that distinctive yellow-green that only Artists Palette can produce. Deep shadows carve through the ravines, adding dimension to the undulating terrain. The distant mountains frame the scene with their subtle purple haze, and create depth that draws your eye through the composition from the warm foreground to the cool horizon.
I recommend a Chromaluxe metal print, which amplifies the luminosity of the mineral colours and gives the image a contemporary, gallery-quality finish.
