Autumn Layers of Colour

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. The dawn fog below Centennial Ridges created layers of colour on this chilly fall morning.

The hike to this viewpoint is challenging — steep climbs over exposed rock, several kilometres of trail each way — but the reward is one of Algonquin's most spectacular panoramas. On this chilly fall morning, with fog pooling in the valleys below, the view was more dramatic than usual.

The fog had arranged itself in bands, filling some valleys while leaving others clear. Colour emerging from white, forests appearing and disappearing as the layers shifted. Closest to me, the trees were sharp and vivid — reds, oranges, yellows in full autumn glory. Further out, each ridge was slightly more muted, the fog softening the colours until the most distant hills were mere suggestions of shape.

I spent time on the ridge, watching the fog evolve as the sun rose higher. Some layers burned off while others persisted, constantly rearranging the composition below. This frame captures a moment of balance, when the layers were distinct but connected, when the colour was visible but mysterious.

Centennial Ridges in fall is a destination that deserves its reputation. The combination of elevation and surrounding forest creates views that justify every difficult step.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the depth of the layers and the richness of the fall colours. For those who earn their views.
