Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge

from $275.00

Florida Keys, Florida. The historic Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge nearly connects Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. I thought the water was fantastic!

This bridge was part of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, the audacious project that connected the Florida Keys by rail in 1912. A hurricane destroyed the railroad in 1935, and the tracks were converted to a highway. But at Bahia Honda, the old railroad bridge stands separate from the road bridge, a monument to early 20th-century engineering ambition.

I was drawn to the water beneath the bridge as much as the structure itself. The Florida Keys sit where the Atlantic meets the Gulf of Mexico, and the mixing of waters creates these impossible blues and greens. The bridge frames the water, providing structure for an otherwise abstract composition of color.

Bahia Honda State Park is consistently rated among Florida's best beaches, and views like this explain why. The water really is this color — no filters, no enhancement needed. It's what happens when sunlight passes through clear, shallow water over white sand, reflecting back every wavelength of blue and green.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish essential for the water's brilliant colors. Florida Keys photography that proves paradise exists.
