Bonita Springs, Florida. Some photographs represent years of determination finally rewarded. I had been trying to get close enough to a Bald Eagle for a truly intimate portrait for three years, and this moment in Bonita Springs marked the day persistence finally paid off. This bird was thoroughly occupied with devouring a fish it had just caught, and this fortunate distraction allowed me to approach close enough to capture the image I had long envisioned.
The journey to this photograph was marked by countless near-misses. Bald Eagles possess extraordinary eyesight — estimated at four to eight times more powerful than human vision — and they typically spot photographers long before we spot them. I had experienced numerous occasions where an eagle would take flight just as I was positioning my camera, leaving me with nothing but the sight of broad wings disappearing over the treeline. Learning to read their behaviour, understanding their preferred perching sites, and developing the patience to wait rather than approach — these skills accumulated over years.
What captivates me about this image is the combination of power and calm it conveys.
