Bare Trunks
Haliburton, Ontario. There is a forest of birch trees in Haliburton that I return to after a fresh snowfall. The white bark of the birches against fresh white snow, with the dark striations and knots providing the only contrast, creates a minimalist composition that feels both peaceful and slightly haunting. Snow from a recent fall blankets the ground and the trunks of these slim, bare birch trees in the middle of the woods.
The slim trunks rose from the snow like columns. The fresh snow clung to every surface, emphasizing the vertical lines and creating a rhythm of white on white with just enough contrast to define the forms. I moved slowly through the forest, not wanting to disturb the perfection with footprints, looking for the ideal grouping of trees.
This image represents winter in its most essential form — stripped of colour, reduced to line and shape and texture. The birch trees, having shed their leaves, stand bare yet somehow elegant. There is beauty in this nakedness, in this honesty of form. The forest has nothing to hide, and in that transparency, there is a kind of peace.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish recommended to complement the soft, high-key tones and prevent the bright whites from becoming harsh. Winter's simplicity.
