Big Blue
Naples, Florida. A long exposure coupled with intentional camera movement on Naples Beach.
Intentional camera movement transforms Naples Beach into an impressionistic study of blue.
This image was made using ICM — intentional camera movement — where the photographer deliberately moves the camera during a long exposure. The result is blur, but controlled blur that conveys motion and emotion rather than simple stillness. The waves become streaks of blue, the sky blends with the water, and the beach becomes an abstract composition.
ICM is unpredictable. You set parameters — exposure length, direction of movement, timing — but the results depend on factors beyond conscious control. I made many frames to get this one, each slightly different, each capturing a different moment of the wave's motion combined with my movement.
What I love about ICM photography is its painterly quality. The camera becomes a brush, the scene becomes raw material, and the result exists somewhere between photography and painting. This image couldn't exist without the camera, but it also couldn't exist without creative intervention.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish emphasizes the fluid quality of the blurred colours.
