Bigwin
Dorset, Ontario. The SS Bigwin has been a fixture on Lake of Bays since she was launched in 1925. Originally built to ferry guests to the grand Bigwin Inn on Bigwin Island, she is one of the last surviving steamships that once plied these Muskoka waters.
On this morning, I watched as the mist rolled across the water, obscuring and revealing the shoreline in waves. When the Bigwin emerged from the grey, I felt my breath catch. She looked like a ghost from another era, her elegant lines softened by the fog, her presence both solid and spectral at once.
The fog could lift at any moment. I positioned myself to show her profile, that classic steamship silhouette from a more graceful era of travel.
There is a poignancy to this image that I feel every time I view it. The Bigwin is a survivor, a connection to a past that is rapidly fading from living memory. In the fog, she could be setting out on her maiden voyage or resting after her final journey. She carries the romance of Muskoka's cottage country heritage.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish is the appropriate choice, honouring the soft, diffused light and atmospheric quality of the fog while evoking the historical nature of the subject.
