Black and Blue

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. I was hiking just after dawn when I heard wings swish over my head and a raven landed a few feet in front of me. Some of the feathers had a blue tint.

Ravens are common in Algonquin but rarely this cooperative. What caught my attention was the colour of its feathers in early light — not pure black, but hints of deep blue where the sun caught them at the right angle.

That iridescence is easy to miss from a distance or in flat light. Up close, in good light, their plumage reveals complexity — blues, purples, even greens shimmering across what appears from afar to be simple black. A reminder to look more closely.

Ravens are among the most intelligent birds, capable of problem-solving, tool use, complex social behaviour. This one decided I was neither dangerous nor useful, and after a minute or two flew off.

The title references both the blue tint in the feathers and the mood of that early morning encounter — two creatures meeting briefly in the woods, each going about their business.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the iridescent blues in the black plumage. Algonquin wildlife photography for those who look closely.
