Blue Dawn

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Dawn over a secluded lake, the water perfectly still, reflecting soft blues and purples.

The light unfolds in stages. First comes the faintest lightening of the sky, just enough to distinguish water from shore. Then the colours begin to appear — the cool end of the spectrum that precedes the sun's arrival. On this morning, the lake had become a mirror, doubling every colour above it.

The most photogenic moments often come before the sun actually rises. Once that bright disk clears the horizon, everything shifts toward yellow and orange, the shadows sharpen, and the soft quality disappears. It's in that pre-dawn twilight — what photographers call the blue hour — that you get these colours and this diffused light.

The lake reflected everything: the sky, the subtle gradations from dark blue at the zenith to pale lavender near the horizon. I kept my composition simple, letting the reflection create a natural symmetry. Sometimes the best thing a photographer can do is get out of the way.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. The matte finish preserves the soft quality of the pre-dawn light. For early risers and anyone who's ever wondered what the world looks like before the rest of it wakes up.
