Brown Pelican

from $275.00

Naples, Florida. The brown pelican is as much a part of Florida's coastal identity as palm trees and white sand. This one was patrolling the waters off Naples.

Brown pelicans were nearly wiped out by DDT in the mid-twentieth century, their eggshells thinned to the point of collapse. Their recovery since the pesticide was banned stands as one of conservation's success stories. Watching them now, abundant and thriving along Florida's coasts, it's hard to imagine how close they came to disappearing.

What I find compelling about pelicans is the contrast between their awkward appearance and their aerial grace. On the ground, they're ungainly — all pouch and bill and shuffling feet. But in the air, riding thermals and folding into power dives, they're something else entirely.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the subtle colours of the plumage. Florida bird photography for those who appreciate coastal icons.
