Deep in Thought
Barcelona, Spain. The meticulously carved stone figures that adorn the exterior of La Sagrada Familia leave one grappling with a kind of awe that goes beyond words.
The Nativity Facade, designed by Gaudi himself before his death in 1926, is covered with stone figures that seem to emerge from the building's surface like thoughts taking form. This particular figure, its face turned slightly downward, expression unreadable, seems lost in some private reverie that has lasted nearly a century.
What draws me to this figure is its humanity. Unlike the triumphant saints and angels found on most cathedrals, this figure seems genuinely contemplative, even melancholic. The lowered gaze, the slight furrow of the brow, the mouth neither smiling nor frowning but simply being. Gaudi wanted La Sagrada Familia to be a bible written in stone, and this figure reads like a passage about the interior life, the private struggles we carry silently.
Standing before La Sagrada Familia is to encounter the concentrated faith and imagination of one extraordinary man. This figure, frozen in thought, seems to invite the same.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish recommended to honor the sculptural subtlety of the carved figure.
