Duck Bath
Haliburton, Ontario. There's pure joy in this image — a duck throwing itself into its bath with complete abandon, wings aloft, water flying everywhere.
Ducks bathe by dipping their heads, flinging water over their backs, and flapping their wings to work the water through their feathers. It's maintenance behaviour, essential for keeping plumage in condition, but watching it happen, you'd swear it was pure pleasure.
The explosive moments — wings up, water droplets suspended in air — last fractions of a second. This frame captures the moment when everything aligned: wings at full extension, droplets caught mid-air.
What I love about this image is its energy. So much wildlife photography shows animals in repose, but this captures a moment of activity, of life being lived vigorously. The droplets frozen in the air tell you exactly what's happening even as you see it.
Haliburton's lakes support abundant wildlife, and patient observation reveals moments like this regularly. The key is being ready when they happen.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish captures the frozen water droplets and the sense of motion.
