Vittoria, Ontario. Small and fierce, the eastern screech owl looks out at the world with those distinctive ear tufts and a call that sounds nothing like a screech — more like the whinny of a horse.
Eastern screech owls are nocturnal, which makes them difficult to photograph in natural settings. Despite being small, they display the intense gaze and predatory alertness that characterize all owls.
The name is misleading. The screech owl's call is actually a descending whinny or trill. It's a sound you hear in wooded areas at night, often without realizing what's making it. The owls themselves are masters of camouflage, their bark-like plumage making them nearly invisible against tree trunks during the day.
The owl's expression seems to convey personality — skepticism, perhaps, or the patient assessment of a predator evaluating potential prey. Anthropomorphizing, of course, but owls invite it with their forward-facing eyes and seemingly expressive features.
