Faces in the Sky

from $275.00

Barcelona, Spain. Gaudi paid great attention to all elements of design in a building — including the vents on the roof!

These ventilation structures at Casa Mila, covered in their mosaic armor, seem to be watching the city below with expressions both alien and knowing. Gaudi designed Casa Mila between 1906 and 1912, and the rooftop represents some of his most fantastical work. The ventilation towers are grouped and shaped to resemble helmeted warriors, their visors dark and mysterious against the pale tile surfaces.

The dark openings read as eyes, the protruding forms suggest noses or beaks. What moves me about this image is its reminder that Gaudi saw life and personality everywhere. He did not merely design buildings; he created beings. These rooftop sentinels have kept watch over Barcelona for more than a century, their faces turned toward the sky.

Pair with “Casa Mila Roof Vents” for a set of two.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish recommended to enhance the luminous quality of the mosaic surfaces and deepen the shadows of the “eyes.”
