Haliburton Highlands, Ontario. Fall in the Haliburton Highlands at dawn means brilliant coloured leaves and mist rising from the lakes.
The mist was thick as I arrived. But as I watched, it began to lift, revealing layer after layer of autumn colour beneath. First the closest trees emerged, their reds and oranges vivid against the grey. Then the middle distance appeared, colour punctuated by the vertical forms of evergreens.
I shot continuously as the mist lifted, knowing that the window for this phenomenon is measured in minutes, not hours. Each frame was different as new elements emerged and others faded back into the haze.
This image represents what I look for in fall photography. The mist adds mystery and depth that pure sunshine can never achieve. The colours, softened slightly by the atmospheric conditions, seem more painterly than photographic. Autumn as impression rather than documentation.
