Fire and Ice

Aurora, Ontario. An early winter snow storm resulted in a beautiful but unusual scene of fall colour under winter white. When the storm swept through Aurora while the autumn colours were still clinging to the trees, I knew I had a rare opportunity. The combination of fall colour and winter snow is fleeting; one warm day or one heavy snowfall will end it. I grabbed my camera and headed into the storm.

The snow was falling heavily, coating every surface in white while the trees still blazed with red and orange leaves. The contrast was surreal — warm and cold, autumn and winter — all existing in the same frame. It should have looked chaotic, but instead it felt magical, as if two seasons had agreed to share the stage for one brief performance.

I worked quickly, knowing the conditions were changing by the minute. Some trees had already dropped their snow-heavy leaves; others would follow soon. I found a maple still holding its red leaves, now frosted with white, and made it my primary subject. The falling snow created natural bokeh in the background, adding to the dreamy quality.

This image reminds me that extraordinary conditions can occur anywhere. You don't need to travel to distant locations to witness something unusual — sometimes it comes to you, if you're ready and willing to venture out into the storm. It is a photograph about transition, about the spaces between seasons where unexpected beauty lives.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish essential to make the autumn reds burn against the white snow.
