Goat Face

from $275.00

Navajo Nation, Arizona. Deep in Lower Antelope Canyon, light and shadow work together to create illusions. In this swirling sandstone, I saw a face — a goat's profile emerging from the rock.

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon carved by millions of years of flash floods cutting through Navajo sandstone. The narrow passages twist and curve, creating walls that look like frozen liquid. When light enters from above, it bounces between the surfaces, illuminating some areas while leaving others in shadow. The compositions change constantly.

This face emerged from the interplay of a ridge and two shadowed hollows — eyes and muzzle appearing from what was, moments before, just another section of curved rock.

The orange and red colours are natural, iron oxide in the sandstone responding to light. This is what the human eye sees when standing in these narrow passages. The canyon does the work; photographers just show up.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the luminous quality of the lit sandstone. Southwest photography for those who see faces in rocks.
