Venice, Florida. Parenting lesson in progress: the young heron was begging loudly for food, and the parent was completely ignoring it.
The young bird was nearly adult-sized but still displaying juvenile behaviour — that insistent begging call, the open bill demanding food, the overall impression of entitled impatience. The parent, meanwhile, was demonstrating the kind of studied indifference that eventually teaches offspring to feed themselves. Major squawk from junior. A lesson there.
Heron parenting involves a gradual withdrawal of support. At first, adults feed chicks constantly. As the young grow, feeding becomes less frequent, and the chicks must increasingly fend for themselves. What I witnessed here was that transitional phase — junior was hungry, parent was done providing room service.
