Great Horned Owl

from $275.00

Southwestern Ontario. The adult great horned owl is a powerful predator with a deep hooting voice that defines wild nights.

This portrait shows a mature great horned owl, the namesake “horns” — actually feather tufts — clearly visible. Those tufts have nothing to do with hearing (the owl's ears are on the sides of its head, hidden under feathers). Their function may be communication, camouflage, or species recognition. Whatever their purpose, they give the species its distinctive silhouette.

Great horned owls are apex predators of the night forest. Their talons are powerful, and they hunt with silent flight provided by specialized feathers that muffle the sound of their wingbeats. Prey rarely hears them coming.

The call of a great horned owl — a deep, resonant hooting — is one of the most recognizable sounds in North American nature. It carries through the forest, a declaration of territory and identity. Hearing it on a winter night, you're hearing a sound that humans have heard for thousands of years, largely unchanged.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the detail in the plumage and the depth in the orange-yellow eyes.
