The climb to Harwood Lookout is steep, but the view over Smoke Lake makes every step worthwhile.
This trail switchbacks up a ridge through mixed forest before emerging at a rocky outcrop with a panoramic view. On a clear fall day, you can see for miles — layers of forest rolling toward the horizon, lakes tucked into valleys, the whole Algonquin landscape spread below like a map made real.
The fall colours were at their peak, reds and oranges and yellows draped over the hills. Smoke Lake occupied the middle distance, its dark water providing contrast to the bright foliage surrounding it.
The challenge with panoramic views is finding a focal point. The eye needs somewhere to rest, something to anchor the expanse of detail.
