Hidden by Fog

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Early morning before the fog cleared, the forest below Centennial Ridges looked eerie.

I'd started my hike early, climbing in the dark to reach the ridgetop before dawn. As I ascended, I passed through bands of fog. By the time I reached a viewpoint, the forest below was completely hidden, a sea of white with only the tallest trees poking through like islands.

Fog in a forest carries an eerie quality. It changes the character of the place, turning familiar into strange. The trees that emerged from the white seemed isolated, cut off from each other, each standing alone. The usual depth and context that makes a forest a forest was gone, replaced by this flat, featureless white.

I photographed the scene from above, capturing the ghostly quality of the trees barely visible through the fog. The image has an atmosphere that's different from my usual work — darker, more mysterious, less about beauty than about mood.

The fog cleared within an hour, revealing the fall colours that had been hidden beneath. But this earlier image stays with me, a reminder that Algonquin has many faces, and not all of them are welcoming.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish essential for preserving the moody atmosphere and soft gradations. For those who appreciate that wild places can be unsettling as well as beautiful.
