In Conversation
Venice, Florida. Two great egrets in breeding plumage, engaged in what appeared to be an intimate exchange.
During breeding season, great egrets grow their spectacular white feathers and the skin on their faces turns from yellow to bright green. They also engage in elaborate displays — bill touching, plume raising, synchronized movements that strengthen pair bonds. What I witnessed here looked like exactly that kind of connection, two birds oriented toward each other.
What draws me to images like this is the suggestion of relationship. We can never know what birds actually experience, but their behavior invites interpretation, and these two certainly appeared engaged in something significant. The title reflects that impression — a moment of connection captured without fully understanding its meaning.
Great egrets are monogamous for the breeding season, and displays like this reinforce the pair bond that will see them through the demands of nesting and chick-rearing. Whether we call it conversation or courtship or simple biological behavior, it makes for compelling photography.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish softens the scene while preserving the detail of the plumes.
