Long exposure photography transforms moving water into something dreamlike, and this image pushed that transformation to the extreme. Twenty seconds is long enough for waves to completely smooth out, turning the gulf into a mirror. On this evening, the sky offered iridescent colours in the clouds.
The smooth water creates calm that lets the eye focus on the colors above. Without wave texture to anchor the view, clouds become the subject, their colors doubled in the water below. It's a reversal of typical seascape photography, where water usually dominates.
