Louisiana Heron
Bonita Springs, Florida. The early morning hours belong to the herons. This Louisiana Heron, also known as the Tricolored Heron, is one of my favorite subjects. They are more active and acrobatic than their larger cousins, making them entertaining to watch and challenging to photograph. This bird had been working a section of shallow water with determination — and was successful during its early morning feeding.
I had been tracking this heron when it made a lightning-fast strike and came up with a small fish in its bill. The success of this shot required anticipation — I was already focused on the bird, already pressing the shutter when I saw its body tense for the strike.
Louisiana Herons are striking birds, with their slate-blue plumage, white belly, and distinctive chestnut coloring on the neck. During breeding season, they develop wispy plumes. The soft early morning light brought out all these subtle color variations while providing enough illumination to freeze the fast action.
There's a satisfaction in photographing a successful hunt. The heron worked hard for this meal, and I worked hard to capture it. The resulting image tells a story of patience and precision playing out each morning in the Florida wetlands.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish recommended to highlight the iridescent quality of the heron's plumage and the dynamic action of the catch.
