Lowdermilk Beach
Naples, Florida. This beach, reborn after Hurricane Ian's devastation in September 2022, welcomes visitors to sandy stretches once more.
Hurricane Ian struck southwest Florida in September 2022, one of the strongest hurricanes to make U.S. landfall. Naples took a direct hit, and beaches like Lowdermilk suffered extensive damage. The recovery has been substantial — extensive restorations to the park have brought the beach back to its pre-storm condition.
I photographed Lowdermilk after the restoration, wanting to document its return. The image shows what looks like any beautiful Florida beach — but knowing the history adds something. This beach was storm-tossed, damaged by hurricane force. That it looks like this now comes from both natural recovery and human effort.
Beach communities depend on their beaches, not just economically but emotionally. Losing a beach to a storm is trauma; seeing it return is healing. Lowdermilk's restoration matters to everyone who loves this stretch of coast.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish suits the soft light and peaceful scene.
