Milky Way

from $275.00

Haliburton, Ontario. Astrophotography requires patience and a willingness to sacrifice sleep. For this image of the Milky Way over Kawagama Lake, I tracked moon phases and weather patterns, waiting for clear skies and darkness that would allow the galactic core to show itself.

The technical challenges of night sky photography are significant. But they pale beside the emotional impact of witnessing the Milky Way in a truly dark location. Haliburton has relatively low light pollution, and on this summer night the galactic center blazed overhead with an intensity no photograph can fully capture. The inky lake below became a mirror, doubling the stars in its still surface.

What I love about this image is the way it connects us to something vast. Every point of light in that band across the sky is a sun, many with their own planets. The light reaching my camera had traveled thousands of years to arrive at this lake in Ontario. That thought never fails to humble me.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish recommended to maximize the luminosity of the stars and the depth of the cosmic darkness between them. Our galaxy, reflected in still water.
