Naples, Florida. The historic Naples Pier stretched into the Gulf of Mexico at sunset, a gathering place where locals and visitors came to watch the sun set until Hurricane Ian damaged most of the outer section.
The pier was built in 1888, originally to serve as a freight and passenger dock. It's survived hurricanes and fires, been rebuilt and extended, and up until Hurricane Ian served primarily as a sunset viewing platform — one of the best on Florida's Gulf Coast. On clear evenings, crowds used to gather at the end, watching the sun drop toward the water and often breaking into applause as it disappeared.
I photographed from the beach, using the pier's silhouette to anchor the composition against the colorful sky. The structure provides scale and context — it tells you this is Naples, this is community, this is a tradition that's been happening for over a century. It will again.
