Northern Sunset

from $275.00

Haliburton, Ontario. There was complete and total silence when I was fortunate enough to be in Haliburton at sunset. No boats, cars, chainsaws, or anything else, except for the birds and the call of the loon in the distance. Perfect.

As evening approached, I made my way to a lake I had visited many times before. Something about the quality of the light suggested this sunset might be special. As I set up at the water's edge, the first hints of colour began to appear in the western clouds — pale pinks and soft oranges that deepened with each passing minute until the entire sky was ablaze.

The photograph captures the sunset at its peak intensity, when the clouds seemed lit from within. The colour palette ranges from deep magenta at the top of the frame through brilliant oranges and golds to the cool blue of the lake below. The water's surface is so still that the reflection is nearly perfect, creating a symmetry that amplifies the already impressive sky. The dark silhouette of the treeline provides anchor, separating sky from reflection and giving scale to the vastness above.

What I remember most is not just the visual spectacle but the sound — or rather, the absence of it. That silence made the experience feel somehow sacred, as if I had been granted access to something usually hidden. Photography can capture light and colour, but it cannot capture silence. I can only describe it and hope the image conveys some of that stillness.

This print brings the drama of a northern Ontario sunset into any space large enough to do it justice. The horizontal format suits living rooms, cottages, and offices with substantial wall space. I recommend the Chromaluxe metal print, which brings out the luminous quality of the sunset colours and creates depth in the reflection.
