Osprey

from $275.00

Sanibel Island, Florida. This osprey was keeping a watchful eye as its mate brought sticks to build the nest.

Sanibel Island is prime osprey territory — the combination of shallow waters full of fish and abundant nesting sites makes it ideal habitat. These birds have adapted remarkably well to human presence, building their massive stick nests on poles, platforms, and any other elevated structure they can find.

What struck me about this moment was the bird's vigilance. While its mate worked on the nest, this osprey was scanning constantly — checking the sky for eagles (which will steal fish and even attack osprey nests), watching the water for movement. The yellow eyes, characteristic of the species, seemed to take in everything.

Ospreys are pure fish specialists, the only North American raptor that dives feet-first into water to catch its prey. Their reversed outer toes help grip slippery fish, and their feathers are denser and oilier than most hawks'. Every aspect of their design serves their fishing lifestyle.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the detail in the feathers and the intensity of the yellow eyes. Florida bird photography for those who appreciate apex predators.
