Pointer

from $275.00

Navajo Nation, Arizona. A finger of stone extends from the canyon wall, seemingly pointing toward something beyond the frame — another of Antelope Canyon's countless suggestive formations.

The human eye constantly searches for meaning in abstract forms. Show someone the swirling rock of a slot canyon and they'll see faces, animals, figures from myth. This formation immediately suggested a pointing hand, one finger extended, directing attention somewhere out of sight.

The pointer emerged from the interplay of a harder ridge of stone and the softer material around it. Differential erosion is the technical term — when materials of different hardness are exposed to the same erosive forces, the harder material stands proud while the softer erodes away. Over time, these small differences in rock composition create the dramatic shapes we see.

I framed this shot to emphasize the pointer while including enough surrounding context to show the flowing forms from which it emerges. The warm light typical of Antelope Canyon illuminates the formation, making it glow against the darker shadows behind.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish brings out the warm tones and the three-dimensional quality of the formation.
