Pop of Colour

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Sometimes a photograph is about contrast — the thing that doesn't quite fit, the element that catches your eye precisely because it's different.

I was in the forest during that transitional period when some trees have turned while others are still holding onto green. The forest floor was a mix of brown and green, the expected autumn palette. Then I noticed these bright red sugar maple leaves, freshly fallen, resting in that sea of green and brown. Their red so vivid it almost looked artificial against the muted surroundings.

I got down low to bring the leaves into sharp focus while letting the background soften into blur. The red demanded attention, and I wanted to give it the frame it deserved. A simple composition — just a few leaves on the forest floor — but simplicity is often what makes an image work.

What I find compelling about this moment is its brevity. Those leaves had probably fallen recently. Soon they'd be brown and curled, indistinguishable from everything around them. But right now, in this window, they were perfect — still holding their colour, still announcing that fall had arrived even if the rest of the forest hadn't quite caught up.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish makes the red leaves pop even more dramatically against the softer background. For those who notice the details that others walk past.
