Purple Haze

from $275.00

Algonquin Park, Ontario. Algonquin Park is always spectacular, and this was the case once again at Centennial Ridges a little after sunset. Hiking out through the woods when it is almost dark isn't much fun!

The conditions that create this phenomenon are specific: warm water, cool air, and the particular quality of light that occurs in the brief window after sunset. On this evening, the scene before me brought me instantly to attention. A layer of mist caught the post-sunset light in shades of lavender and violet I had rarely witnessed before.

The photograph captures the scene at its most unreal. The purple mist hovers above the water's surface, creating bands of colour that seem almost painted. The far shore is visible as a dark silhouette, grounding the image and providing scale, while the foreground water reflects the coloured mist in subtle variations. The overall effect is dreamlike.

What causes this purple haze phenomenon remains somewhat mysterious. Water temperature, air temperature, humidity, and the angle of the sun all play roles, but the precise combination that creates these colours is unpredictable. That rarity makes images like this one more valuable.

This atmospheric print brings a sense of mystery into any space. The soft colour palette makes it suitable for bedrooms, meditation spaces, or anywhere a calming presence is desired. I recommend the Chromaluxe metal print for its ability to render the purple tones with accuracy and depth.
