Reach for the Sky

from $275.00

Zion National Park, Utah. Near the Lower Emerald Falls, the towering vertical wall rose sky high — a reminder of the scale that defines this canyon.

Zion's cliffs reach great heights, and standing at their base, the top seems impossibly distant. This image captures that sensation of vertical space, walls rising beyond easy comprehension, sky reduced to a bright strip between stone faces.

The rock is Navajo sandstone, the same formation that creates Antelope Canyon in Arizona. Here it's been carved by the Virgin River into sheer walls rather than narrow slots, creating a landscape of temples and thrones named by early visitors who saw religious grandeur in the formations.

I tilted the camera upward to emphasize height, accepting the distortion that comes with wide-angle perspectives in narrow spaces. The walls converge toward sky, which is how it feels to stand there and look up.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish captures sandstone texture and the brightness of that slot of sky. Zion photography for those who appreciate the view from the bottom.
