Haliburton, Ontario. The Hollow River in winter is lined with water, ice, and snow, nearly devoid of colour.
There is a kind of beauty in the absence of colour. I had come to the Hollow River on a winter morning, when the landscape had been reduced to its most essential elements — the dark flow of water, the white of snow and ice, and every shade of grey in between. The world felt hushed.
The river had not frozen completely, and the interplay between the flowing water, the shelf ice along the banks, and the snow-covered rocks created a study in texture and tone. I was drawn to how the ice formations seemed to reach out toward the moving water, creating organic patterns that spoke of the ongoing battle between flow and freeze.
What draws me back to this image is its meditative quality. In a world of constant stimulation and colour, this stripped-down palette feels restful. The near-absence of colour becomes its own kind of beauty — a reminder that simplicity can be just as powerful.
