Haliburton, Ontario. The Hollow River surges between snow-crusted banks, its turquoise waters frothy and fast. Ice clings to the banks while the river rushes on, movement against stillness, the wild Ontario winter on display.
What strikes me most about this image is the tension between elements. The ice wants to claim the river, creeping in from both banks, but the water won't have it. It surges through the narrowing channel, throwing up white froth where it collides with the frozen edges. Something almost defiant about it.
The color palette surprised me when I reviewed the images later. I expected the usual winter monochromes, but instead I found this vivid turquoise cutting through the whites and greys, a ribbon of summer trapped in the heart of the cold.
