Lake of Bays, Ontario. The Oxtongue River rapids rush beneath orange autumn leaves.
The Oxtongue River is one of the premier autumn photography destinations in Ontario, and for good reason. The combination of rushing rapids and overhanging maples creates compositions that seem almost too perfect to be natural.
The rapids were running high from autumn rains, and the water had taken on that silvery quality that comes from overcast skies reflecting off a turbulent surface. But above, the beech trees were at peak colour, their orange and gold leaves creating a canopy of warmth that contrasted with the cool silver of the churning water below.
The title came easily. Silver and gold — the two precious metals, together in one frame. The water rushing beneath, unstoppable, while above, the leaves cling to their branches for just a few more days before they too will fall and be carried away by those same rapids.
