Snowy Egret Reflection
Bonita Springs, Florida. Is this bird looking for a fish, or studying its reflection?
I was photographing a snowy egret as it waded through the shallows when it stopped and bent its neck downward, fixed on something in the water below.
The water that morning was perfectly still — not a ripple — creating a mirror reflection. I had to capture this before it vanished, composing the shot to include both the bird and its double in equal measure.
Snowy egrets are distinguished from other white herons by their black bills, black legs, and bright yellow feet — what birders call “golden slippers.” The bird's wispy breeding plumes cascade down its back.
Whether this egret was hunting or having a moment of avian contemplation, I don't know. The symmetry of bird and reflection creates something meditative. I find it calming.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish recommended to enhance the soft mood and the tonal gradations in the white plumage.
