Snowy Plovers at Dawn

from $275.00

Fort Myers, Florida. Just after dawn on Bunche Beach, a few snowy plovers had gathered on the sand, their pale plumage making them nearly invisible against the white beach.

Snowy plovers are small shorebirds, easily overlooked among the more conspicuous gulls and terns. They nest directly on sand beaches, which puts them in conflict with beach-goers. Their populations have declined as coastal development has eaten away at their habitat, and they're now protected in many areas.

This is a panoramic image, wider than standard format, which allows room for multiple birds while capturing the expanse of beach that defines their habitat. Available as a 48“w x 27”h print.

What gets me about snowy plovers is how exposed they are. Small, their nests barely visible depressions in the sand, dependent on beaches that humans also prize. Conservation efforts focus on protecting nesting areas with signs and fences, but the birds' long-term survival depends on people being willing to share the shore.

The wide shallows, soft light, sense of space that plovers need to feel safe. A species holding on.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Matte finish preserves the soft tones of the beach and the subtle markings of the birds.
