Spyder Parachutes
Algonquin Park, Ontario. Spyder parachutes hover in the early dawn mist on the banks of a park river.
There's a brief window in early morning when the mist hasn't lifted and the light hasn't fully committed to the day. That's when I found these spyder parachutes — the spherical seed heads that hover above the reeds like tiny hot air balloons waiting for a breeze.
The challenge with subjects this small is getting close enough without disturbing them. Any movement stirs the air, and they bob and sway on stems thinner than thread.
What draws me to shots like this is the combination of fragility and persistence. These seed structures are engineered by nature to catch the slightest wind and carry their cargo to new ground. They look impossibly fragile, but they're built to survive the journey. On a still morning in Algonquin, before the wind picks up and scatters them, you can catch them in this moment of suspension — ready to go, but not yet gone.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. The ultra gloss finish brings out the glow of the backlit threads against the morning mist. For anyone who appreciates nature's smaller engineering marvels.
