Tamerack's on Fire!
Algonquin Park, Ontario. The yellow light in the air looked like that after a fire.
Tamaracks are unusual conifers that lose their needles each fall, but not before turning a brilliant gold that can light up an entire hillside. This image captures that moment when the yellow was so intense it looked like the trees were actually glowing. The challenge was capturing the intensity without oversaturating. The camera wanted to dial back what my eyes were seeing. In post-processing, I actually reduced saturation slightly — the original files looked artificially boosted, when in fact they were just recording what was there.
The name came to me as I stood there. The yellow against the darker evergreens behind really did look like flames, like the whole grove was ablaze in the best possible way. It's a brief moment in Algonquin's calendar, easily missed if you're not paying attention, but unforgettable if you catch it.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish to maximize the luminous quality of the tamarack gold. Fall photography for those who know that maples don't have a monopoly on autumn colour.
