Near Moab, Utah. A hidden cave offers respite from the Utah sun.
In the Utah desert, shade is precious. This hidden cave offers a break from the relentless sun, a cool pocket in a landscape of heat and light.
What drew me to photograph this cave was the contrast between the shadowed interior and the bright desert framed by the opening. The sandstone curves smoothly overhead, shaped by the same erosive forces that created the arches and canyons throughout this region.
Caves and alcoves like this are scattered throughout the Southwest, each one a reminder that the seemingly solid rock is constantly being reshaped. What looks permanent is actually in slow motion transformation, the rock retreating as wind and water do their work.
