The Tree
Muskoka, Ontario. Sometimes you find a photograph by searching, and sometimes it finds you. This was the latter.
Fog diffuses the early light, and autumn leaves add colour to the landscape. A lone tree by the river, its colour deepening as the fog lifted and sunlight poured through.
The tree's position was ideal — close enough to the water to be doubled in it, isolated enough from other trees to stand as a singular subject. The fog diffused everything behind it, creating a soft backdrop that made the autumn colours pop.
A long exposure lends a flowing quality to the river, giving it that glassy look that emphasizes the reflection. The tree's colour was at peak — that brief window when the leaves are fully turned but haven't started to fall. A week earlier and it would have been mostly green; a week later and the branches would be half bare.
Finding the right vantage point took some searching: far enough back to include both tree and water, positioned to catch the light filtering through the fog, angled to keep distracting elements out of the frame. The final composition came together in those few minutes when everything aligned.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish to bring out the vibrancy of the fall colours.
