The Wall
Zion National Park, Utah. An evening's sunset lit up this wall of rock just inside the Park, turning the sandstone into a glowing canvas.
Zion's entrance from the south passes through a corridor of towering walls, and when the sun is low, these walls catch the light in ways that stop you cold. This image captures one such moment, when sunset turned the rock face orange-gold while the sky above faded to purple. The contrast between warm rock and cool sky made the wall seem to generate its own light.
The wall is sheer Navajo sandstone, deposited as sand dunes some 180 million years ago. Those dunes solidified into stone and were then uplifted and carved by the Virgin River, creating the canyon we see today. The cross-bedding visible in some sections reveals the angle of those original dunes, frozen in stone.
I made this image from the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, which offers views like this without requiring any hiking. The accessibility is part of Zion's appeal — you don't have to be fit or adventurous to experience the beauty. It's right there, visible from your car window, demanding attention whether you're ready or not.
Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish captures the glow of sunset on sandstone.
