Victoria, Australia. The Great Ocean Road is a scenic drive that traces Australia's southeastern coast. The formations are a result of millions of years of wind and water erosion.
The Twelve Apostles, those limestone sentinels standing against the waves, represent millions of years of geological patience and erosion.
What fascinates me about this location is the awareness of time's passage. Each wave removes microscopic particles of limestone. Each year, the formations grow slightly smaller. We are witnessing a slow-motion disappearance, a geological memento mori that reminds us even stone is temporary when measured against the patience of the sea. Several of the original apostles have already collapsed; those that remain will eventually follow.
This is why we photograph, I suppose: to preserve moments that cannot last, to hold onto forms that are slowly dissolving before our eyes. The Twelve Apostles will continue their measured retreat long after I am gone.
