Wood Duck

from $275.00

Fort Myers, Florida. The wood duck drake must be one of the most beautiful waterfowl, and this one was showing why.

I photographed this bird in Fort Myers. Their appearance is unmistakable — the iridescent green and purple head, the chestnut breast, the patterns that look more like decorative art than plumage.

What strikes me about wood ducks is how improbable they seem. Evolution usually favors camouflage, but the wood duck drake looks like it was designed by someone who'd never heard of subtlety. Yet it works — the colors and patterns attract mates and intimidate rivals, serving their function despite seeming to violate all rules of survival through concealment.

Limited edition Chromaluxe metal print. Ultra gloss finish is essential here, capturing the iridescence and the patterns.
