Something About Me

My passion for photography began many years ago when I was in junior high. Back then, I had a Praktica camera and began to develop my own black and white film in my family’s basement “darkroom.” While my gear was pretty basic even by the standards at the time, I got tremendous satisfaction from seeing an image develop before my eyes.

But for years, photography took a back seat while I pursued a business career.

I became reacquainted with photography on a trip to Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona. The area is known for its slot canyons, narrow crevices that erosion has carved in the rock over thousands of years. The swirls of stone, the infinite palette of reds cut with moments of blue sky, and the striking beams of light brought back how it had felt to discover colour and light all those years ago.

For years, I juggled a demanding career while igniting my passion for photography, always wondering if I’d get the chance to focus on it. Then the pandemic hit. Like so many others, I had the opportunity or was forced to – depending on your perspective – reflect. I was lucky to decide to retire early and pursue landscape photography. I headed outside. While Utah and Tasmania are fantastic places to visit for photography, Muskoka, Haliburton, and Algonquin Park are my favourites.

I get tremendous satisfaction out of the journey to capture a shot. The story behind each – the travel and hiking to get there, near or far from home; the time of day, sometimes getting up well before dawn; and the set up to compose the image are all part of the journey.
